The Most Important Strategy in 2020 is a Digital One

It’s often said. And most people claim they know this. But why exactly is this true? What exactly does this even mean? And how can YOUR business take advantage of the evolving landscape to ensure your targets are met and your team stays at the front of the game?

Well, the other day Bruce Howe and I took a crack at explaining this to an audience of keen retail enthusiasts via the Massey Business School Retail Reboot Webinar series – Installment 9.

So why is a digital strategy important?

First of all everyone is online.

Not only via their computers, but via their phones, iPads, PlayStations, and so much more. Everyone is online. All. The. Time.

Okay so people are addicted to looking at bright images being displayed from electronic devices, big deal?

Well it kind of is.

Ecommerce sales are predicted to reach around 4.5 trillion dollars in 2021 worldwide. An increase of over 300% from the 1.3 trillion dollars experienced in 2014.

That’s a lot of money.

Even in little NZ we saw this trend’s growth exacerbated over the lockdown period as online retail sales were up 350% under Alert Level 3 compared to the same time during the previous year.

So a digital strategy is important, but what tools does this strategy centre around?

Long story short – websites and apps.

These 2 tools are the most effective for engaging with your customers.

If you don’t have them, then it’s time to undertake a digital transformation based strategy soon or you’ll be left in the dust of change.

Websites Apps
Tell the world your story all the time Personalisable service
Convert traffic to sales Easily send push notifications
Provide customer support  Utilise mobile hardware and software
Point of comparison to competitors Point of comparison to competitors

So websites and apps are good, but how do I go about building them?

Within the realm of websites and apps there are many different ways to go about getting the job done. You can use template, app/website building services such as Shopify, Wix, Firebase, Appy Pie, etc. or you can go for custom solutions that allow for more flexibility.

So how do you know which one is right for you?

  • Define your customer segments
  • Figure out where they spend their time
  • Figure out how they spend their money
  • Use a tool that replicates similar tools they use
  • Highlight the things that matter to them
  • Communicate in a way that makes sense to them
